Continuing with Mercedes’ reputation for reliability, there are plenty of reasons to consider the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Dropside or Mercedes-Benz eSprinter Dropside in 2023, with these two conversions both fantastic in a number of areas. Since the Sprinter was first released in the mid-90s, it has been the most popular van in the whole of Europe, and it was not hard to see why when we test drove these adaptable large vans. When on the look-out for a dropside van, you’ll perhaps have a mental checklist of desirable attributes, and this handy vehicle is likely to tick many of those boxes. On the bulky side and coming equipped with multiple load securing points, this Mercedes Dropside is functional and deceptively easy to navigate, with EV and diesel selections both remarkably usable for construction or landscaping tasks. The Mercedes-Benz eSprinter debuted in 2019, and clearly has no trouble competing with similar large electric dropside vans.
Though generally the eSprinter is ideal for inner-city commuting and shorter drives, the conventional diesel Sprinter may be better suited to driving distances, due largely to a generous fuel capacity and higher top-speed. Engines and Spec
Though this criteria is somewhat tricky to compare, there are unique benefits to both the Sprinter Dropside and eSprinter Dropside variants. Of course, if you’re looking to navigate the roads in an eco-friendly manner, the EV variant is of course extremely sustainable, clean air compliant and quiet on the roads. Even better, the 55kWh battery can be quickly charged overnight or over shorter periods from your home, and a full charge from a mains outlet will take about 8 hours – ideally while you’re sound asleep. A fast charge option can top the battery of the eSprinter up to 80% in under 30 minutes.
Of course more expensive to run, due in part to the rising fuel prices as of late, the diesel 2022 Sprinter models are fitted with a powerful 2.0-litre turbodiesel engine, replacing existing 2.1-litre engines fitted within the 2018 generation. A maximum 190 horsepower is certainly admirable, stacking up well against large van rivals. Compared with the power output of the eSprinter, the corresponding electric van’s battery is capable of delivering an expected range of up to 96 miles. Realistically, this won’t be suitable for a long distance delivery driver or individual who regularly travels up and down the motorway, even if owners will benefit from low running costs compared to diesel options
Interior
As you would expect from a van built upon the award winning Sprinter chassis, this Mercedes-Benz Dropside won’t let you down when it comes to the interior features or efficiency of conversion. A classy dropside first and foremost, we had absolutely no hassle loading either vehicle as required, and particularly appreciated the attention-to-detail in regards to the load space and functional tailboard/sideboard combination.
The interior space is both well-built and spacious within both variants, with adjustable seats, enhanced accessibility and a neatly designed dashboard to boot. Though rather disappointingly the eSprinter is only available in one trim model, Mercedes have clearly been continually working on the features of the non-electric Sprinter, making modern releases much more luxurious than previous models. Neither option is wholly lacking in interior features, with the diesel Sprinter Dropside even retaining one of the best interactive in-cab screens we’ve encountered in any modern van.
As you would assume, the eSprinter falls short of expectations when faced up against a diesel counterpart, with a reasonable payload of 731kg more than good enough for delivery drivers, couriers and similar trades. The same size diesel Sprinter can hold a maximum of 1306kg, which is competitive within the criteria of large vans.
The Verdict/Snapshot
As stated at the beginning of this review, comparing an EV to the diesel counterpart is a tough job considering the plentiful differences between the two. While interior features and some exterior specs remain the same, the variation in outright price and compatibility with distance-driving make this a real case of preference.
